Larry Fink at a 2025 meeting

In his 2025 chairman’s letter, Larry Fink reported that Americans surveyed by BlackRock estimated an average retirement requirement of $2,089,000. The figure describes respondents’ expectations. It is not a universal retirement target or a new 2026 survey.

Read the number in context

An average can hide substantial differences between households. The income someone needs depends on spending, pensions, housing, taxes, retirement duration and other resources. A U.S. survey cannot be transferred directly to readers in Belgium, Morocco or another pension system.

The private-assets argument needs scrutiny

The letter argues for broader access to private assets in retirement portfolios. That is BlackRock’s position, not a guaranteed improvement in a reader’s outcome. The letter also acknowledges issues around valuation frequency and the ability to withdraw money.

Our interpretation is that expected returns should be weighed alongside liquidity, fees, transparency and the time horizon. A long holding period does not remove investment risk, and a historical comparison does not establish what a particular product will deliver.

Start with the income gap

A more practical question than “Have I reached the survey average?” is “What spending would my reliable retirement income cover?” Separate ongoing expenses from emergencies, and state inflation and longevity assumptions explicitly. A personal plan may require professional advice specific to the household and jurisdiction.
