New York Stock Exchange building, illustrating US equities

A daily market move rarely has one provable cause. To assess an explanation, first establish what the index measures, then separate observed evidence from interpretation.

Understand the benchmark

S&P Dow Jones Indices describes the S&P 500 as an index of 500 leading companies, weighted by float-adjusted market capitalisation. Larger weights therefore have more influence on the index. A headline about the benchmark does not establish that all constituents moved in the same direction.

Three layers to check

Timing can support an explanation, but it does not prove causation. Competing interpretations should be presented honestly.

Earnings and expectations

Our research framework asks whether new information changes expectations about profits or the price investors will pay for them. Compare a company’s result with its earlier guidance and a clearly identified estimate, rather than labelling every increase a positive surprise.

Rates, sectors and concentration

Check whether the movement is concentrated in heavily weighted companies or spread across sectors. When discussing interest rates, identify the observed rate or policy decision and the time period. Avoid assigning a market decline to inflation without naming the release and its evidence.

This evergreen guide contains no claim about the current week’s return. A genuine market update should supply dated numbers and sources before making a conclusion. Readers can use the Markets page for quotes, bearing in mind the instrument and delay labels.
